Orris Butter

Orris butter, also known as orris root butter or Beurre d'Iris, is a highly prized aromatic substance derived from the rhizomes (roots) of the Iris pallida, Iris florentina, and Iris germanica plants. These rhizomes are harvested and then left to dry and mature over several years, concentrating their natural fragrances.

The main characteristic scent of orris butter is deeply floral and slightly powdery, often compared to the smell of violets. It also has woody and earthy undertones, with a hint of fresh cucumber-like and slightly metallic notes. The primary aromatic compound responsible for its distinctive fragrance is irone, which develops during the drying process and is highly valued in perfumery.

Due to its complex and elegant scent profile, orris butter is used as a fixative and base note in many luxury perfumes, imparting richness, depth, and a subtle sophistication. Its scent is not only cherished for its olfactory beauty but also for its supposed ability to enhance the layers of other fragrances used in a perfume blend. Despite its high cost, orris butter remains a coveted ingredient for its unique scent characteristics and its lasting power in fragrance compositions.
