Hyraceum

Hyraceum, also known as Africa Stone, is a traditional aromatic material derived from the petrified and fossilized excrement of the rock hyrax, a small mammal native to Africa and the Middle East. Over time, their urine and feces accumulate and harden into a rock-like substance in rocky areas where these animals live. This aged excretion, which can be centuries old, is then collected, usually without harm to the environment or the hyrax.

Hyraceum exhibits a complex scent profile, primarily characterized by rich, musky, and earthy undertones along with leathery and smoky nuances. It also possesses subtle hints of animalic notes that can be both intriguing and warm. The fragrance of hyraceum is deeply layered and changes as it develops on the skin, evolving from an intense animalistic musk to softer tones of tobacco and amber, making it a cherished ingredient in the creation of perfumes, especially niche and natural fragrances. Its capacity to add depth and a fixative quality to perfumes makes hyraceum a valuable addition in the palette of natural perfumery.
