Gum Rockrose

Gum rockrose (Cistus ladanifer) is a shrubby plant native to the western Mediterranean region, particularly flourishing in Spain and Portugal. This species is notable for its striking appearance and aromatic qualities. It typically grows up to 1 to 2.5 meters in height and features large, white flowers with a distinctive yellow or maroon spot at the base of each petal, blooming from mid-spring to early summer.

The leaves of the gum rockrose are dark green, lance-shaped, and possess a sticky resin called labdanum on their surface. This resin has been used historically in herbal medicine and perfumery. The scent profile of gum rockrose is complex and intensely aromatic. It is primarily characterized by a warm, amber-like fragrance with woody and musky undertones. Hints of resin, balsamic, and slight earthy notes can also be detected, sometimes with a subtle leathery quality. This rich and exotic aroma makes gum rockrose a valued addition to aromatic oils, perfumes, and incense.
