Castoreum Absolute

Castoreum absolute is a distinctive animal-derived extract used in perfumery and traditionally obtained from the castor sacs of beavers. These sacs are located near the animal's tail, and the substance is secreted by the beaver to mark its territory. Despite its origin, castoreum is highly valued for its rich, complex scent profile.

The scent of castoreum absolute is deep, leathery, and musky, with a slightly sweet, resinous undertone. It can also display hints of animalic and smoky nuances, making it particularly effective in adding warmth and depth to fragrance compositions. In perfumery, it is often used in small amounts to impart a natural, earthy tone and to enhance the base notes of a perfume, contributing to a fragrance’s longevity.

Because of ethical concerns and the difficulty in harvesting, natural castoreum is increasingly rare in the market. Nowadays, synthetic alternatives are commonly used to replicate its scent in perfumes and other scented products. These synthetic versions aim to mimic the original's rich and enveloping qualities without the use of animal-derived ingredients.
