Bitter Orange Leaf

Bitter orange leaf, derived from the Citrus aurantium tree, is often utilized in perfumery and aromatherapy for its distinctive aromatic properties. This leaf, from the same tree that gives us bitter orange fruit and neroli (from the flowers), embodies a complex scent profile that is both refreshing and rich. Typically, the essential oil extracted from these leaves, sometimes referred to as petitgrain oil, offers a woody, slightly floral and herbaceous aroma that is noticeably more robust and less sweet compared to the blossoms. It carries strong green and citrus undertones, with a hint of a bitter edge, evoking the lush density of green foliage and the tanginess of citrus peel. The bitter orange leaf’s scent has balancing and uplifting effects, making it popular in the formulation of perfumes, body lotions, and colognes where it imparts depth and a refined, natural freshness.
