Angarwood

Agarwood, also known as oud, is a resinous heartwood that forms in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees when they become infected with a type of mould. This rare and valuable wood is famed for its distinctive fragrance and is used in incense and perfume. When the trees are wounded and infected, they produce an aromatic resin as a defense mechanism, which saturates the wood and leads to the formation of agarwood.

The scent profile of agarwood is complex and can vary significantly depending on its origin, age, and the extraction method used. Generally, it is characterized by a warm, woody base with rich, balsamic notes. The aroma can also exhibit hints of spices, amber, and musk, sometimes with a slight sweetness. Higher quality agarwood tends to have a deep, powerful, and intoxicating scent, often described as having layers of complexity including earthy, smoky, and nutty aspects. Its multifaceted fragrance makes it highly prized in the perfumery industry and among scent enthusiasts worldwide, revered for its ability to evoke a sense of profound depth and serenity.
