Ambroxan

Ambroxan is a synthetic compound used extensively in perfumery, derived from sclareol, a natural compound found in the aromatic herb clary sage. Chemically, it mimics ambergris, a rare and valuable substance traditionally used in making perfumes, which is produced in the digestive system of sperm whales.

Ambroxan stands out for its warm, sweet, and woody scent profile, often described as having an amber-like fragrance with subtle musky and fruity nuances. It is celebrated for its ability to add depth and warmth to perfume compositions, enhancing other fragrance notes by providing a rich texture that is both comforting and sophisticated.

Due to its versatile scent and excellent fixative properties, ambroxan is a favorite among perfumers. It helps in prolonging the longevity of a perfume on the skin, making it a staple in many modern fragrances. Ambroxan’s aroma is often associated with smoothness and a slightly dry, almost mineral-like coolness, which is why it is commonly found in the base notes of many popular perfumes, lending a lingering, velvety finish.
